Earlier this year the International Surfing Association (ISA) announced a key strategic partnership agreement with the International Lifesaving Federation (ILS) to establish a global standard water safety course for Surf and SUP instructors and promote water safety worldwide.

In February and March the first ISA / ILS International Surf and SUP Instructor Aquatic Rescue and Safety Courses were held in both Sri Lanka and the Maldives.  These courses were very well accepted by the local instructors who found them challenging and informative. All of the instructors felt that the course gave them sound knowledge of the skills needed to operate effectively in water safety during their surf lessons.

These water safety courses were delivered by Tim Jones, ISA Course Presenter for Sri Lanka, in conjunction with the ISA Surf Level 1 Courses.  Tim Jones said:

“The ISA/ILS Water Safety Course was a major complement and huge value add to the ISA instructor courses. This new and exciting initiative from the ISA and ILS gave me confidence that the instructors in my courses were trained in both the technical aspects teaching the sport and the water safety aspects for ensuring safety during their lessons.”

The ISA / ILS International Surf and SUP Instructor Aquatic Rescue and Safety Courses were run over two days and included modules such as surf awareness, encountering hazards during lessons, first aid and emergency first aid, including CPR and the vital skills of board rescue.

Included in the course are also the fitness elements and tests that offer a great insight to practical physical elements and skills required during any rescue scenario.

The 2019 ISA Coaching and Instructing Course calendar has kicked off with successful courses run in Nicaragua, Scotland and the Maldives, amongst others. Building upon the success of the ISA Coaching and Instructing Program in 2018, these three ISA courses trained twenty-five new ISA instructors and confirmed the appointment of a new ISA Course Presenter in Scotland.

Nicaragua

From January 14-16, 2019, an ISA Surf Level 1 Course was conducted in El Tránsito, Nicaragua. The course was presented by Marcelo Castellanos, ISA Course Presenter from El Salvador, and supported by the FENISURF and Compassion Causes. The course was the third held in Nicaragua since 2017, but the first conducted in the northern region of the country. All the participants in the ISA Course were local instructors from the area and were overjoyed with the opportunity to professionalize their abilities as ISA surf instructors.

Stuardo Torres, ISA Course Participant said:

“Marcelo went above and beyond to help us learn how to do things properly and become the best coaches that we could be. On behalf of the entire group, we feel blessed to have taken this training because our desire is to become more professional. We hope that other surfers and surf schools in Nicaragua and beyond will see our professionalism as an example to be followed. Thank you to Marcelo and the ISA for the support in making this happen.”
